Journalism and Social Media - 1319 Words

Because I am a journalism student, I have talked, researched and discussed with many of my fellow students and faculty members about the topics above. I am choosing to talk about this because I think it is important and they are pertinent issues in the journalism field. I am also very interested in this topic, so I thought it would be fun to take the opportunity you gave us to design our own multi-part question and write about something in journalism that is appealing to me. I recently read an article somewhere, in which BBC journalist Sigrun Rottman said that objectivity in journalism is an illusion and the media should think more of being balanced than being objective. According to her, objectivity in the media does not really exist.†¦show more content†¦As the rest of this chapter demonstrates, a journalist’s choice of news sources, news â€Å"frame,† and continued attention to an issue all represent subjective choices. Even if a journalist is careful to avoid injecting overt opinion, the choice and construction of a news story can still introduce bias† (226). So here’s what I think; if the reporter is not aware that his or her reaction and thus way of presenting the news is affected by their world view of the news, then the reporters subjective view of the news is the view given, not the objective view that is the goal. However, if reporters ARE aware that their view is a component of the news, then if they are ethical reporters, they will consciously minimize the impact of subjectivity. They will not only accept, but allow for and consider that no one person’s world view is the only reality. And as Julie Corbett helps me out with this, she says too that â€Å"one way to provide objectivity and balance is the long-standing journalistic tradition of bringing in the opposing sides† (226). Stepping totally away from that discussion, I’m going to move into to talking about journalism and social media; how social media is beneficial to them what they need to do in order to use it effectively. I came across this video about journalists and social media, where a woman by the name of Mary-Louise Schumacher,Show MoreRelatedSocial Media And Its Impact On Journalism1742 Words   |  7 PagesSocial media has had a huge impact on the way that journalism is practiced and the way that the general public perceive news in the present day.
